October 24, 2018 - A skin-contact white vinified in earthenware kvevri. No sulfites employed at any point. 12% alcohol.
Very hazy, only slightly translucent lemony yellow color. Sweet-toned, somewhat herbal and slightly sharp nose with aromas of honeyed richness, some sappy herbal tones, a little bit of candied gummi bear character, a little bit of honeyed richness, light lemon marmalade tones, bretty hints of wax and leather and a melony touch of ripe fruit that reminds me of Southern Rhône whites. The wine is lively, medium-bodied and nicely acid-driven with quite pure and vibrant flavors of tart green apples, some sappy herbal tones, a little bit of unripe cantaloupe, light mineral hints of crushed stones and a touch of apple peel bitterness. The wine is enjoyably structured with its high acidity and somewhat grippy medium tannins. The finish is lively, slightly bitter and gently grippy with rather long, crunchy flavors of fresh red apples, some lactic pear yoghurt tones, a little bit of leathery funk, a sappy green hint of grassy herbal character and a touch of apple peel bitterness.
A rich, fresh and enjoyably balanced Tsolikouri that is enjoyably pure and clean not only for a natural wine, but especially for Okro's wine; these wines seem to be anythign from very pure and vibrant to hideously mousy and undrinkable. Normally they are quite balanced and drinkable, but obviously from the very extreme end of natural wine, whereas this wine is recognizable as a natural wine, but nothing from the extreme end of the stylistic spectrum. All in all, an enjoyable and well-made orange wine that might continue to develop in a cellar, but drinks nicely already now.
