September 2, 2023 - The debut vintage of this label: 100% Piedirosso. Fermented and aged in new French oak barrels for 8 months. 14% alcohol.

Dense, almost fully opaque blackish-red color. The nose feels ripe, sweet and dense with moderately oak-driven aromas of juicy black cherries and elderberry juice, some dried dark fruits, light vanilla tones, a little bit of toasty mocha oak and sweet hints of Christmas spices and mulled wine. The wine feels dense, polished and somewhat sweet-toned on the palate with a full body and intense flavors of ripe black cherries, some dried dark fruits, a little bit of vanilla, light bilberry and elderberry tones, a sweet hint of cloves and other Christmas spices and a touch of stony minerality. The overall feel is very firm and tightly-knit, thanks to the high acidity and quite assertive, moderately grippy tannins. The finish is grippy yet rich, polished and silky with a long, somewhat sweet-toned aftertaste of juicy black cherries, some oaky notes of cloves and vanilla, a little bit of elderberry juice, light toasty notes of mocha oak, a hint of bilberry juice and a touch of dried dark fruits.

I was surprised how this wine turned out to be surprisingly youthful and surprisingly evolved both at the same time. The overall feel is definitely youthful: the tannins are still very stern and unresolved, the ripe fruit is pretty in-your-face and the very obvious oak influence has not integrated with the fruit one little bit. However, there is also a savory, somewhat evolved dried-fruit note that lingers in the background all the time, lending a bit developed feel to the wine. I wonder if it is because of the age or because of the vintage (which was pretty hot and dry in most parts of Italy)? While an impressive wine in its own right, I felt the wine was somewhat too polished, modern and oaky for my taste - if I wanted to taste a varietal Piedirosso, I'd love to taste how the variety actually tastes like - not along with tons of sweet and toasty notes of extracted oak spice! I think there is rather little sense of place or varietal character here and I really hope age would help the wine gain better sense of balance - at least it feels like this wine is built to age.

July 16, 2023 - Drinking very well, I did not expect such integrated tannins and smooth drinking yet from a '17.

August 24, 2021 - Nez alcooleux, fruits rouges à noyaux, tabac. Riche et puissant, rond tanins gommeux, c’est épicé et chaleureux. Plutôt lourd à mon goût. C’est profond, pas mauvais, mais pas mon truc. 87 pts

    August 8, 2021 - Grape variety : 100% Piedirosso
    Altitude : 400m
    14%vol.
    21-23 yrs vines
    Malolactic fermentation in steel tank
8 months aging in new oak.
Last for more than two weeks in fridge. Very well balanced. Ripe dark cherries with moderate acidity. Full body yet supple and juicy.

June 4, 2021 - Deep, dark fruity on the nose. The palate offers terrific intensity of dark fruits and a balance exactly where I like it to be, meaning the acidity is certainly not modest. It's not just a fresh fruits impression, there is a dried fruits side to it as well. Indeed somewhat resembling what one often finds in an amarone.
Earth and minerals are taking over towards the end that is really, really dry with obvious tannins.
Indeed, intensity, concentration, balance and complexity make this a terrific red, absolutely showing its southern provenance.
