Community Tasting Notes 9

January 6, 2024 - Right after opening, the nose was fairly closed, with just hints of dark fruit, so I decanted about half the bottle. The wine opened up to dark cherry with a bit of dried apricot but many other aromas and tastes well integrated into a very enjoyable complexity. It continued to get better as it progressed through the roughly 2 hour pre- and during dinner tasting. My sense is that this wine will continue to improve with further cellaring and so I'll be picking up a few more bottles to lay down. Excellent quality for the $30 price.

January 14, 2022 - Another Coravin pour of this from a bottle I was going to give away but didn’t. Similarly to the last time this wine is tight as a drum with somewhat bitter tannins. Good texture and decent nose but a distinct bitter edge on the finish especially. I will assume this needs lots of time but I’m not thrilled so far.

September 12, 2021 - After seeing a couple mixed reviews of this I thought it worth a try, so Coravined a glass. Labeled 14,5% ABV. The wine is a dense garnet but not quite opaque and a touch lighter than the most ripe versions of Syrah without going all the way to purple-black. Seems very viscous as it clings to the glass with rather obvious long slow legs (not sure if its just the alcohol) yet not glass staining. Nose seems fairly typical with florals like violets, dark black berries and ripe plummy fruit. There is a slight whiff of alcohol, but seems to dissipate rather quickly. Also a little charcoal and game meat. Palate is not hot but just a little sharp and extremely tight. A little bitter edge on the finish. The fruit is there just beneath the surface but blocked by what seems to be a rather tannic layer. Seems like there is plenty of fruit there and a touch of chocolate but it is not obvious right now. My conclusion is that this wine NEEDS a LOT of time in the cellar. A very long decant may suffice in the more near term but I wouldn’t even think of touching another bottle of this until after its 10th birthday and the peak is way beyond that. And probably scoring higher then...
