August 23, 2019 - This is one of the two special Albert Gessinger Zeltinger Sonnenuhr ** Auslesen: in order to assess the impact of aging environment, a batch of ** Auslese was split in half: "Gelagert" was aged in traditional wine cellars and "Geborgen" was aged underwater in a well located within the Gessinger cellars. 9% alcohol, 66 g/l residual sugar and 8,8 g/l acidity. Tasted half blind with the "Gelagert" bottling.

Moderately pale lemon yellow color; looking slightly deeper than the Geborgen version. Surprisingly closed nose with reticent aromas of lemon marmalade, some stone dust notes, a little bit of flint smoke and a touch of wool. The wine feels leaner and more neutral on the palate than the Geborgen version with medium body and rather sweet yet quite crisp flavors of creaminess, some wool, a little bit of stony minerality, light steely notes, a hint of sappy greenness and a hint of green apple. Quite sharp, racy acidity here, yet still the mouthfeel is slightly oily, thanks to the residual sugar. The finish is crisp, lively and somewhat restrained with slightly short flavors of sharp lemony citrus fruits, some tangy salinity, a little bit of incisive steely minerality and a hint of wool.

A tasty, crisp and sweet Auslese, but overall rather lean and one-dimensional in style - especially for its age. I assumed this was the version aged underwater, since this wine felt showed so very little evolution in comparison to the other wine, but it turned out that I was wrong: this was the cellar-aged version. I don't know if this was just somewhat reductive and would've come across more expressive with some air, or if the wine has evolved faster than the Geborgen version, losing its fruit with age whereas the Geborgen version still retains quite a bit of richness. Whatever the case, this was a pleasant little Auslese, but nothing particularly memorable. No way it is worth its price at 145€ (a two-bottle pack of Gelagert/Geborgen costs 290€).
