Community Tasting Notes 5

August 8, 2023 - Striking aromas - to my mind they had more in common with high quality Clare/Eden Valley Riesling than Viognier. Taught, waxy, some kerosene. On the palate very clean and fine, though as the wine warmed up those developed notes just mean that the wine began to fall apart. Very pleasurable, a bit idiosyncratic, not for keeping much longer.

December 5, 2020 - Caviste UK zoom tasting of Hobbs wine, introduced by Caviste owner Mark Bedford and with winery owners Greg and Alison Hobbs online at 6am from the Barossa Valley. This is a small production winery, just 3,000 cases per year. Greg and Alison started the winery about 25 years ago. The name "Tin Lids" is cockney rhyming slang for "kids".

This viognier is 50% oaked, 50% stainless steel. It's light orangey gold colour. The nose has plenty of depth, lemon, citrus, honeyed. It's rich, warming, soft, citrus fruit, well balanced, great balance of acidity. Great now. Greg says it will keep 20 years but will then taste completely different. That's quite possible if you want to experiment, but I'd say drink most of your stock sooner.

August 26, 2020 - Honey, peach and blossom on the nose. Bags of flavour but quite austere and more noticeably acidic than your typical Rhone Viognier. Quite mineral and saline on the palate with a medium finish that lingers. A delicious wine providing an excellent expression of this grape and excellent QPR.

June 26, 2019 - Return to Aus; 6/23/2019-7/5/2019 (Adelaide, South Australia wine regions, Tassie, Yarra, etc.): Lovely Viognier. Lots of honey, touch of the waxy but not too much. Good depth of flavor. It's very well structured and well balanced. Also nice and enjoyable to have a white thrown into the tasting.
