April 7, 2024 - Dark red fruits, graphite rocks, hint of mountain shrub freshness. Thought the fruit here was a bit more dense and compact. Not showing much age at all.
Density of fruit reflective of the vintage IMO. I like the direction the newer wines are going to emphasize freshness and character.
April 2, 2024 - Note to follow
February 12, 2024 - Napa and Sonoma, January 2024: Tasted at winery.
Deep ruby color.
Complex nose, with dark cherry, rosemary, and rocks.
On the palette, notable acidity, mellow tannins, long finish. Some spice in the back. Will definitely benefit from several years in the bottle and would love to taste this again in 2027.
November 24, 2023 - Tasted at the winery along with 2019 Penultimate and 2021 Promontory barrel sample. Well balanced and structured with layers of violet, blackberry, licorice, plum throughout the mid palette, with powerful yet finesse tannin. 97pts
November 14, 2023 - 檀香,red fruit, some spices, some green notes, elegant.
September 7, 2023 - Napa day trip (Promontory, Dakota Shy, Detert) (Napa): Beautiful aromas of expressive red flowers, bright and refreshing red fruits.
The palate showed a bigger, explosive graphite haze (imagine the result of a finely powdered ball of graphite that was dropped onto a white sheet of paper), tree bark and matching fresh red fruits from the nose. Good freshness.
Ranked last for me out of the lineup.
September 7, 2023 - Promontory - double blind tasting. 18 Penultimate, 12 Prom and 17 Prom. 21 Prom in barrel, not part of blind tasting.
This was the shock of the blind tasting, but not surprising that it is showing well in a blind. At its price point, maybe a pass for me, but this was one of the better 17s I have had from Napa...ever. These blind tastings really help to remove biases from the tasting and should be done more often. I will most likely try to encourage hosts to do this more for me going forward.
February 28, 2023 - Promontory Wine Dinner by Kerry Wine (Restaurant Petrus): Promontory Wine tasting including 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018.
2017 is probably the lightest of the 5 wines. Nose definitely not as open as the others. Still feels very closed. Minerals, fresh. Fine
January 31, 2023 - Still young. Juicy, yet quite vertical and dry with evident tannin. Very classic with plenty of black berries, yet I find this the weakest of the bunch with less concentration and less hope for the future. Still: Wait at least 2-4 years.

October 6, 2022 - dark fruits, menthol.
