Introduction
Another Napa day trip with fellow CT'er bsumoba. Who knew things would've turned out the way they did.
Flight 1 - Cask sample (1 note)
Small taste of the '21 Promontory to wake up our palates (literally).
A clean purity of red berries. Fresh acidity, intense and taught red raspberries and lively cranberries on the palate. Beautifully bright and even dusty minerals. Leaves a pleasantly steeped tea and a trail of minerals on the finish.
Full of vibrant life, so youthful and wild. May be difficult to taste now (I didn't mind it, but I'm biased towards youthful wildness in wine) but will be exciting to see how a few more years in cask will soften this up.
Flight 2 - Blind tasting (3 notes)
Shout outs to our host David for thinking of doing this for us, made it really fun.
The '18 Penultimate was the wine of the blind lineup.
Dark red fruits, dry and clean tree bark, beautifully dry and lightly bitter earth and minerals. Nice streak of graphite. Awesome precision and balance here, with great display of fruits.
Ranked as my favorite of the lineup.
The palate showed a bigger, explosive graphite haze (imagine the result of a finely powdered ball of graphite that was dropped onto a white sheet of paper), tree bark and matching fresh red fruits from the nose. Good freshness.
Ranked last for me out of the lineup.
Similar plums on the palate, dark graphite, and deep earth. This is dense (flavor, not weight) and packed full of flavors. Imagine you can put all of these flavors in a sachet and have it steeped it. It's like the tannins are completely saturated with the flavors and have become really bold.
Admitting bias here, I love this kind of packed intensity. Host recommended to not touch for another 10 years and can still mellow out. I think this is pretty tasty now but to each their own!
Ranked as second but not very far behind first.
Flight 3 - Dakota Shy & Detert (4 notes)
Hosted by Billy, cool cat, and the man himself, Tom Garrett of Detert and Dakota Shy. Tom is about his craft and it shows in his wines.
On the palate is a vortex of dark blue and black fruits, fruit infused earth, a trailing swirl of minerals and a gentle, sexy spiced damp oak at the end.
All grapes sourced for this wine are mountain fruit. This is awesome juice and tasty af now. I wished there was just a touch more acidity, not that there wasn't any. Just surprised it was lacking some, being that its all mountain fruit. Nonetheless, amazing showing! A strong 95+
On the palate is a bigger and darker intensity of black core graphite, pulverized black bitter minerals, dark blue fruits, and dried large slabs of bare oak (no tree bark). Even with this strong and savory mineral core, dark yet soft fruit envelops this core, making sure it doesn’t get out of hand.
This blend consists of 20% valley floor fruit and the remainder 80% is Howell mountain fruit. Tasty with some air time now, but this is trying to show off that it can stand the test of time. Will develop better with some age. 95+
Thank goodness the palate wasn't as shy as the nose *insert rimshot*. Dark blueberries, deep earth, a gentle tar note (almost like charcoal even), and nicely bitter oak. Good delivery on the mid-palate but not as strong on the finish, fades a bit on the finish.
All grapes sourced for this wine are valley floor fruit. Not sure if this was beginning to close down or in a phase, but this seemed like it didn't want to show up to the party, like it didn't wanna go out to socialize but ended up being dragged out. Was told by the host that the fruits sourced weren't affected by the fires, which seems to hold true as no flaws were detected. Maybe a few years in bottle should give it some energy. 94+ for now.
Dark, brooding and intense red and black fruits on the palate, black earth with beautiful graphite, and a dark mineral streak that somehow still shines bright throughout. Beautifully brooding while keeping a swiftness and lift on the palate.
I had high expectations of this *looks at bsumoba* and my goodness did this deliver! Remember when you were younger (my god I just felt so dusty saying that), and you heard of legends of a dark and mysterious protagonist? You didn't think this person exists, until you came across them somehow, somewhere. I don't know if I'm just talking this up because I like it so much, probably am but kinda don't care, but the fruit is so good here. It's as if you can tell it has gone through the struggles in life, yet it never faltered in keeping its essence true. I'm excited to follow this throughout the years. 98+
Closing
First of, shout outs to bsumoba for setting things up!
This time around, the surprise blind at Promontory really made the trip that much more fun. Our tastings in the afternoon was such also nice surprise. Dakota Shy and Detert showed really well. Definitely producers you should keep an eye out for.
