Community Tasting Notes 3

September 19, 2021 - My third Cayuse and very impressive. Very much traditional Syrah on the nose with that meaty animal element with good fruit.
Very easy to enjoy now and comes across sweet, like a few Cayuse I’ve tried, but give it a few hours and the sweetness does recede. Has tingle and spice on the finish.
I possibly enjoyed it more early on but some time in bottle will be interesting as this is young but very approachable and drinking now onwards.

September 2, 2021 - First of this vintage we've tried, just curious how a very young one would taste; also opened a 2010 Cailloux to compare. Two totally different wines. This was an opaque garnet-purple, the 2010 a slightly translucent dark ruby with slight brown edges. This had a fresh, fruity aroma of strawberries-raspberries, some "grapey" qualities, seemed similar to a young zin. The 2010 was more of a typical Cayuse, with its smoke and roasted meat aromas. On the palate this had lots of fresh fruit, nice acidity, but tannin well in the background, remarkably drinkable for such a young wine. The 2010 had softer, round, more elegant and complex flavors, now fully mature. A fascinating comparison of the same wine eight years apart. Both very enjoyable, very drinkable now.

January 20, 2021 - In general I think these wines have become cleaner and less funky in the last 3-4 years. This one though still very green/bitter has really nice purity and crispness. Black fruited with smoke, dark chocolate, dried earth, green pepper, bacon and olive tapenade. Surprisingly approachable now and texturally very luscious. The Cayuse brand remains several notches above both No Girls and Horsepower. Opened in the bottle only for a few hours.
