Community Tasting Notes 2

November 27, 2020 - 100% Garnatxa Blanca. Pre-fermentation cold soak with the skins. Fermented and aged for 5 months in stainless steel tanks. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Quite neutral whitish-yellow-green color. Youthful, somewhat sweetish and rather primary but also slightly restrained nose with aromas of sweet golden apples, pear drops, some Bassett's yellow wine gums and a hint of dried aromatic herbs. The wine feels ripe, moderately broad and quite balanced on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and dry, juicy flavors of sweet-toned yellow fruits, cantaloupe, some stony minerality, a little bit of pink grapefruit, light candied tones, a hint of tangy salinity and a touch of crunchy white peach. The acidity remains in the background, but feels high enough to lend good sense of structure to the wine. Overall the mouthfeel is pleasantly silky and juicy with nice sense of freshness despite the obvious ripeness. The finish is ripe and juicy with mellow, medium-long flavors of sweet Golden Delicious apple, some white peach, a little bit of cantaloupe, a hint of mineral spice and a touch of salinity.

Am enjoyably rich, ripe and fruity white that doesn't feel too rich, overripe or excessively fruit. The sweet, primary and slightly candied note in the nose suggested that this was a very young wine and nothing in the taste really contradicted this, which is why I'd say this is probably something from 2018. The modest yet high enough acidity and the sweetish, white-toned fruit would suggest this is probably Pinot Blanc, Garnacha Blanc or a warmer-year Silvaner (2018 would fit this!). My first guess is a 2018 Garnatxa Blanca from Catalunya (perhaps Terra Alta?) and secondary guess is German Weissburgunder. And would you look at that! This turned out to be a 2018 Garnatxa Blanca from Catalunya - only from Priorat, not from Terra Alta (I didn't guess Priorat because normally they are blends and most Terra Alta whites are pure Garnatxa Blanca). I guess this is pretty much true to the variety, since I could pick up the variety, region and vintage even when tasting the wine fully blind! All in all, good, pleasant stuff - but could really benefit from a few years in a cellar. The wine was this young a bit too primary for my taste.
