December 24, 2021 - This is the 4th vintage of the Barbatto that I am tasting and to my regret it is the least in quality up to now. It still has some of the dark, floral, aromatic quality that was so pronounced in the excellent 2013, but unfortunately it comes dangerously close to being too sweet. Acidity is almost completely missing. Am I correct in thinking the consecutive vintages 2013, 14, 15 and 16 have an increasingly sweet character? Would this be as a consequence of the growing influence of critics and winemakers who favour and promote very mature and sweet fruit driven red wines, specifically when it comes to southern Italians? It's an evolution I do not appreciate.
The 2017 is available now as well. Maybe I should try that one to see if this trend is confirmed and taking it too far.
