October 5, 2019 - Stéphane Othéguy makes wines with huge personality from small parcels in central Côte-Rôtie. Rozier contains vines of Syrah (in this case Sérine) planted 2002-2003. No or very little destemming, 3 weeks maceration and 13 month in old 228 l Bourgogne barrels. Overall very minimalistic winemaking.
The nose sets the tone straight away, can't recall I've come across a similar expression ever. Super perfumed and a bit all over the place but settles down and becomes more balanced after 10 minutes in the glass. Decanted an hour prior to that. Deep notes of dark berries, sweet and lush. Blackberry, plums and conserved black cherries. Iron, dark coffee beans, earth, new leather, dates, muscovado sugar, tobacco, charcuteries, smoke, moist leaves and much more. Bottomless, you could spit notes for hours if you wanted to. There is a sweet note that really stand out that I can't really pin down, unique and probably in the acquired taste-category.
The palate has a powerful structure with young feisty tannins and good acidity. The full profiled fruit creates balance. The first minutes with the wine makes me think this is too much, too intense, too wound up. But with time in the glass the elegance and complexity starts to show and everything makes sense. There's a seriously good craftsmanship behind this, considering the relatively young vines it's very impressive. Long aftertaste.
Of course very young but drinks fairly well already. Intriguing wine to say the least.
