October 17, 2020 - This is a comparatively dark and savory bottle of Whitcraft compared to the fresh, lean, bright red fruit you get in the Santa Barbara area bottlings. The nose was a bit tight, and this needs time, but with a little coaxing you get clay, dark cherry, orange peel, and spice on the nose. The palate falls in line with red and dark fruit, a savory earthier quality than the southerly counterparts show, and maybe a touch of rose petal, forest, and faint mushroom. Not only darker, but denser and more tannic than Whitcraft's signature...this clearly hung on the vine longer given '18's cooler autumn than has become typical. The tannins are not 'tannic' in the grippy way you might think when I use that word. It's a polished structural thing...aka smooth (cringe at my own word use) tannin. Silky might be a better word. This was really wonderful, but this bottle will really shine with several more years on it.

August 29, 2020 - Decided to crack this one early to check out the new vineyard source. I’ve never opened a Whitcraft wine that I didn’t like on Day 1, but this one definitely wasn’t showing much at first. Pretty nondescript, stuck a cork back in and hoped for the best tomorrow. I shouldn’t have worried, the clouds parted and the sunshine came out on Day 2 in a big way. Baking spice, dark fruit, citrus inflections, a bit of strawberry, with a slightly wild side, but not earthy (yet) or natty. One for the cellar, folks! Great material here.
