Community Tasting Notes 5

  • Neecies Likes this wine:

March 3, 2019 - Medium mature red color, leather and spice with some animal notes on nose and palate confirm tertiary stage of development. Opened up considerably in a decanter, mildly chunky sediment needed to be removed. Nice enough but won't improve from here.

January 26, 2018 - This bottle might have been a little corked. The somms said no, dining companions no, but I got a little cardboard must and a bit of flat palate. If not then a hair over the hill, at least this last bottle. If I had a bunch of these I'd check in to make sure it's not on the downslope.

October 3, 2015 - Dried out dark cherries jump out of the glass, hiding a slight toastiness and dried stems in the bouquet. Perhaps a hint of animal hide and vanilla. Quite some freshness on the entry followed by density on the mid-palate with ample tannic structure. There is nothing compelling on the finish.

Is this a good wine? Yes!

    Can this evolve further? Yes!

Will this evolve into something exciting? Probably not, but I have to say this is a damn good Marsannay that punches well above its weight.

April 11, 2012 - This did not show well. Out of the gates, nice floral red and black fruit flavors with density and depth. Shortly thereafter, it got clumsy, disjointed, austere, and sort of shut down. While this did soften up and come together to a certain degree by day 2, it still did not drink as well as it did when I last sampled it in 2008. As Marsannay goes, I woud have thought this would have shown better by age 7. My inclination is to hold for a while, maybe 3-5 years. Even so, I don't have high hopes for this one over the medium term.

June 13, 2010 - Very nice solid core of dark cherry fruit under some earthy tannins. After a half hour decanting the tannins soften. The wine is lacking a bit of length and complexity but good burgundy for the dollar.
