Community Tasting Notes 4

January 7, 2019 - Ruby center with a watery rim. Pronounced minty high tones that calmed down to reveal ripe blackberry and spice. Medium weight, blackberry and blueberry fruit, gentle herbs, and a loamy, sandy base. Some citrus, licorice, and light but drying tannins to finish. Moderate length. I drink precious little California Cabernet (all of 1 bottle noted in 2018-yikes!) but thought this was an excellent example that was drinking well at age 15. Discrete, classic savory Bordeaux style, not overextracted, but probably right on the verge of dropping its fruit.

March 8, 2018 - Popped and poured. Belcampo, Larkspur, CA

An "early" cabernet from the team at A-R, this wine strikes me as decidedly larger scaled than the current house style, but still a compelling example of Sonoma cabernet. Totally engaging on the nose, with a classic gravelly cassis and graphite core intermixed with distinct minerality of volcanic rock and complicating floral notes. Pure and powerful on the palate, but not heavy or tiring. Had the tannins and acidity to cut through the juice and fat of the Belcampo burger. If I had another bottle, I'd love to see how this wine is in 5 years, although I'd probably still pair it with some fatty beef.

December 18, 2015 - 2 Barrels made of these and proudly boasts 15.5% Alc. We decanted for a good hour to no real impact. This is definitely a muscular and big wine, lots of ripe core of fruit. Violets on the nose, ripe dark fruit, light smoky at times. On the young side and very primary still and to be honest a touch of blunt force. Maybe or better hopefully with time it will develop a bit more. 90 for now

April 11, 2012 - This wine is dark with some opaqueness. Nose is high-toned red raspberries & violet, something akin to the Howards Scented Gum from my youth---very interesting. Palate shows red currant, raspberries, the violets with some other spring flowers. It's been 5 years since I last had this and it has evolved nicely: it's pure and fantastically balanced with deftness and focus. I drink so much Napa Cabernet that but I can really appreciate Sonoma at its best, and this is in that group. Tannins have resolved nicely and acidity lithy and alive. Finish brings in some notes of cedar and espresso beans? Yep. Goes darker toward the back of the palate as well. Lots of life left in this one and glad I have more. I will serve this only to my best guests..... (wink:wink)
