    April 7, 2018 - Served from a magnum.

Translucent mahogany-hued pomegranate color with a pale, yellow-ish rim. Sweet, very developed and somewhat oxidative nose with aromas of raisins, some cherry liqueur and hints of prunes. The wine feels medium-to-moderately full-bodied, developed and quite tertiary on the palate with flavors of raisins, dried black cherries, some wild strawberry liqueur, hints of leather and a touch of oxidative nuttiness. The tannins are still quite firm and offer some counterbalance to the dried-fruit sweetness, but the acidity feels very modest and soft. The finish is smooth and juicy with medium-long flavors of raisins, some savory woody tones, a little bit of wizened black cherries and a hint of beef jerky.

A Rioja that is still somewhat drinkable, but overall is way past its prime. The wine isn't completely in pieces, but were it bottled in a standard bottle, I'm pretty sure there would've been nothing left of this wine. Overall this isn't bad per se as a wine, as the oxidation has mainly stripped the wine of its obvious Rioja qualities, but left enough fruit for the wine to be drinkable. Seeing how 1993 was a cool and rainy vintage in Rioja Alavesa, it's not a surprise that the wine wasn't holding that well anymore, despite the magnum size.
