April 1, 2020 - Still going, but long in the tooth. Probably best 6-10 years ago. Yes, there's still some attractive 'Volnay' purple strawberry fruit, and maybe some pleasant tertiary mint/paté aromatics, but the wine feels short, and short of vigor. Sort of brown and savory. That's 2001 at 19 years, more or less, but i did expect more of Lafarge – especially the top wine. Drink, sure, but don't buy.

April 7, 2019 - A Survey of Volnay (Chicago, IL): Incredibly perfumed in style, this is a wine with an obvious light touch. There is delicate red fruit, with some lovely herbaceous tones that aren’t actually green (like the 2011). The nose is resolved, showing some secondary characteristics, with some earth and dried fruit. The palate is elegant and lean -- subdued and quiet, but also with a lot of complexity. For my palate, this is definitely right where I like my Burgundy to be. My 2nd, group’s 11th.

  • Irisland Does not like this wine:

March 4, 2019 - Not much left here as far as I can tell. Small hint of fruit poking out, but other than that, slightly oxidized, bitter, short, and fading. Pretty tired. Could have just been the bottle? Not terrible with food, but nothing special, and a far cry from what I know this wine is capable of. Past peak, I would try to drink up. Not that 2001 was a particularly great vintage, but even so...

May 21, 2018 - Disappointing; rather diffuse, aged color with orange tinting; oxidative nose with slightly harsh unwelcoming fruit like a hot vintage '86 that aged poorly. Not clearly infected or cooked bottle, just didn't age well or "come around".

December 5, 2015 - Light on the nose with a bit of necco wafer sweetness to the spice and mint inflected rusty cranberry fruit. Has a gentle violet pastille character. Rounded in of modest scale in the mouth with an austerity to the tannins which is the most prominent feature of the palate. The fruit is tart cranberry tinged with modest length. Simple if easy enough to drink, there simply is not much to this, and the structure is winning the battle with the fruit at this point.
