September 1, 2023 - This knockout was gorgeous with all of its cigar wrapper, red currants, herbs, smoke, spice, truffle, rocks, and stones. Refined, elegant, and with just enough, bright red berries in the finish to keep it interesting, with luck, the 89 and 90 could be this good, or better at the same age. Drink from 2023-2030.

June 29, 2018 - From a beautiful high shoulder bottle which never left France (Alain's bottle), this shows an incredibly potent, big, black-fruited, oaky, smoky, slightly nutty, faintly sous bois nose. Such swagger and depth here; a convincing nose. Perhaps not so elegant to make you think 53 blind, but some of the 53s can be big wines (see my notes on the Lafite and Ducru) and it is reasonably svelte for a Pichon Baron, after all. Utterly drinkable, though it has reached its apogee.

June 16, 2017 - Consistent with last bottle from a few months ago. I continue to be amazed at the life this wine still has. After double decanting, the wine spent a few hours aerating. It never waned, and actually improved and became more interesting. There is a lot of fruit left. It is a bit less dense on the palate, but has a nice elegant weight. Keep in mind that this bottle stayed in the negociant cellar not moving for over 60 years. Bottles without such a history may not show as well.

April 15, 2017 - Like walking into a tobacco store in the forest, the wine felt, smelt and tasted great, if you dig all that earthy, old school character as much as I do. Not a wine to age, but to savor and remember how things were 2 generations ago.

February 18, 2017 - Recently purchased directly from a Bordeaux negociant, so perfect provenance. High shoulder fill. Still has lots of life left. The nose was truly addicting, with lots of sweet dark fruits, leather, mushroom, and green pepper. Charming on the palate, but a bit drying due to firm tannins. Acidity is in a good place right now. Adequate length on the finish.
