February 8, 2021 - Super Bowl Sunday blind tasting. I was convinced this CDP was a Syrah, called it a Côte-Rôtie, and I still argue it must have been a mislabeled bottle from Northern Rhone. In actuality this is a blend of 92% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre, but ZERO Syrah. Intense blue-purple hue was what first guided me to Syrah. A mélange of ripe blackberry, blueberry, and black plums accentuated by several turns of from a black pepper grinder. Some meaty, gamey flavors, but no brett. Definitely high alcohol. Dissecting this after the fact, 2017 was a hot dry vintage in the Southern Rhone which explains a riper Grenache with a darker color. Add some Mourvedre to the mix and that explains the pepper and gamey flavors as well as the blue-ish hue. Nonetheless, put this bottle in front of me next week and I will still call Syrah...
