It needs really close scrutiny to reveal that there is some plum and tomato-leaf typicity, underneath all that wooden twiggy oak. On the hot side of balanced, it is genuinely tough, but after (truly) hours and hours and hours of coaxing out it finally showed some life and femininity, with malty roasted interesting bits, some gently ripe fruit, and refreshing acid throughout. A lesson in when to decant and when to show restraint. I'm the last person to claim to be 'mislead' or 'misinformed' by a wine, but I really do wish the French could/would just give us a few candid words on the back label. That truly would be etiquette.

  March 15, 2009 - This wine opened up after about half an hour. Three hours later and there is still not a lot coming off the nose [some cassis] and it is still quite tannic on the tongue. Semi-thick mouth feel with blackberries and some dark chocolate apparent. If I get more of these, I won’t touch the next for at least 3 years. I am scoring it an 89 as is, but I could see it gaining up to 3 points in the future. Good QPR.
