November 28, 2022 - Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Delicious. It’s a favorite vineyard of mine mostly because of Fabio but Luca does an excellent job here. He plays with the whole cluster and creates a wine perhaps with a bit more heft but still that lovely elegance and it drinks super well. We were just at the winery and I felt I wanted to taste and thankfully the truffle tribe was on the same page.

July 3, 2022 - The '18 Monvigliero is a beautiful young wine. While I think the '18 Monvigliero suffers a bit from the tough vintage (it's a touch light, and I think the acidity sticks out a bit too much on the palate), it's very pretty and should age well for the medium term; and it's a great sign for the future of this bottling that Vietti produced this high quality of a wine in the first vintage and in a tough year.

The nose is beautifully perfumed, leading with fresh red floral and exotic spice tones, which stand out from the core of red strawberry fruit, with fresh mint contributing freshness. On the palate, I found the wine a bit more closed off, but showing great potential. It is medium to light in body and very elegant with a silky texture, with fine grained tannins that are just barely noticeable. Acidity is very high - this really stands out - and there is a nice sweetness to the fruit. I found red florals, spices, and red berry fruit, with exotic spices, fresh red floral tones, and minerality lingering on the finish.

I've currently tasted the Vietti Cerequio, Rocche, and Monvigliero in '18. Of these, I find the Cerequio and Monvigliero to be of equivalent quality (with very different expressions of Nebbiolo - the Cerequio more classic than the whole-cluster Monvigliero) and thought the Rocche was weaker, more marked by the vintage.

June 1, 2022 - A premiere at Vietti; from 2019 on 1,9 ha (0,8 ha in 2018), vines with an age of appr. 50 years. 60 % whole clusters were used. This takes you right to Monvigliero, a wine with a true sense of place, especially when tasting it in the complete line up. It has a silken character, with a terrific aromatical spectrum and lift. The equilibrium between density and the trademark purity & finesse of Viettis 2018s is convincing. Subtly integrated tannins caress the palate. In the bouquet I found fresh red stone fruits with an exotic touch, potpourri, dried flowers, orange peel, underbrush and light vineyard peach, embedded within freshness and scents of autumn. Outstanding echo until the sapid, zesty finish. A wine made to represent the subtlety of Nebbiolo on the highest level.

March 13, 2022 - This is laden with spice and almost Burgundian in its perfume and silky mouthfeel. There’s a touch of menthol and mint and it has good build and flow through the palate. The finish really fans out and is persistent. Again the balance here is impeccable.

August 14, 2020 - Great aromatics, strawberries and raspberries abound. It is cool, elegant, and stony. An ethereal wine that invites another sip.
