January 31, 2022 - One of the many reasons to love California is that it is the land of the new - the blank slate, the fresh start, the frontier unencumbered by the old. To be sure, there are excesses when you go west - too much sun, too much ambition, land o' fruits and nuts - but it is a place where magic can happen in unlikely ways. And Paul Lato has found such a way.

The Central Coast is not anywhere we start for great Chardonnay - go to the Sonoma Coast or, better yet, go to the Côte d'Or or, better yet, find this plot in Chevalier-Montrachet that is sacred (or something)... but let's set that all aside for a moment. This is a $70 single vineyard wine that has incredible balance, intensity, and depth. I know Paul Lato has long gotten love from JD and AG - both of whom have tasted more wines than I ever will - but I'll add my amateur opinion: the Lato Chardonnays are among the best in California (and, just so you know, the others I rank in this category are Aubert and Peter Michael, with Kistler and a few others nipping on their heels).

Golden yellow in color and medium in body, the wine offers aromas of peach, apricot, and praline shavings. The flavors are full but precise, with notes of lemon meringue, gooseberry, hazelnut, and saline, with a firm but expansive finish (read: there is an acidic backbone, but the flavors of citrus and nutty keep coming). 13.9% alcohol. 95 at the moment, with upside in 2023.

February 6, 2021 - Golden straw hues like the rolling hills of the Central coast of California . Pear on the nose. Honeycrisp apples, white peach with subtleties of pink grapefruit on the finish. Paul Lato is a master of the Central coast .
