May 15, 2019 - Nice dark rubis-black colour with no bricking whatsoever. On the nose, upon opening, aromas of leather, cedar, balsam, blackcurrant and sweet tobacco. On the palate, the attack is frank, with a good seam of acidity lifting the flavour profile to include red fruit on top of the black fruit, with the addition of the aromas found on the nose. Still lots of tannin, which are somewhat chalky and drying, but of good quality. A good length on blackcurrant, coffee, leather and tobacco. Will see how this evolves with a bit of time. Still very young but in my book, this can be enjoyed starting now, unlike when I had tasted it in 2015. 92-93

With a 4-5 hours of air, a dense blackberry component appears on the palate and somewhat on the nose as well. 92-93

April 8, 2019 - Decanted and drank nicely with food. Superbly balanced. Very dry. Another year in the bottle would be helpful.

February 14, 2019 - First from the case. Medium dark boysenberry red. Chunky sediment in the bottle but no fines or "smoke". Light nose of chalky black currant fruit, leather, stone and graphite. Feels on the light side of medium bodied. Smooth with a crisp finish. Flavours are more black currant, leather and cedar with chalky tannins on the very dry finish. Good length but not by any means fruit forward. This is a wine that definitely needs food to balance it out but nothing to strongly flavoured or this would just fade into the background. Well made but not overly pleasant at this time. Perhaps a few more years in the bottle will make it more broachable.

January 31, 2019 - Brooding classically styled Bordeaux. Brawny dense black fruit, leather, minerals, tobacco, smooth and elegant with firm but round tannins. Those preferring more lush upfront fruit might be disappointed but this was right up my alley. Stunning!

October 12, 2018 - The nose displays red fruits but remains rather closed. In the mouth a lot of matter, fine acids and the typical claret bitter touch. The balance is near perfect and probably the wine with the best balance I have ever drunk. The tannins are firmly but round. The long aftertaste is dominated by black fruits. It needs at least 2,5 hours in the decanter.

(Chateau Léoville-Las-Cases St Julien) Interestingly, this sample was bottled under a synthetic cork, although the wine when bottled for sale will have a traditional cork. This young wine has an almost exotic perfume on the nose, which overall is very expressive and rich in sweet fruit. This has more punch than the 2007 for sure. There is a lot of structure here, an appealing texture, good substance, and plenty of vigour and acidity. This has ripe tannic bones, and there is lovely potential here. A vin de garde and an admirable addition to any cellar.
