April 11, 2024 - Absolutely stunning example of what a properly aged Big Bold Napa Cab can do! 38 Years Old, and it was still drinking like a 2002! Wow, Beautiful bottle. Wish I had more. Absolutely amazing! Still everything you love in a Napa Cab, but all the silkiness and smoothness and complexity and easy to drink that comes with a properly aged wine. Minute long finish!

May 12, 2022 - Pre 1990 Cali Cab + 1981 Birthday Surprise! (Cowford Chophouse): Surprisingly young and coming on the heels of an 84 Dunn this is a more intense wine although of course age has softened the edges. Bigger fruit - lots of blueberry and blackberry and all of that. One of the big differences with Cali and Bordeaux I think is that most Cali wine when well made has a reasonably easy time keeping fruit for many years which can be interesting. This is still really fruit dominant - the secondary notes not there yet (as compared to the Dunn where it was a bit more integrated). The other thing that surprised me is drinking this and the '87 side by side the wines are very similar. Usually see a bit more vintage variation (and to be fair there are some who felt there was some nuance). To me though they both came across as fruit forward, younger in nature, more intense in style. Wines that are not going anywhere.

November 7, 2020 - Upon opening, brownish rim and a little hazy. Initial taste a bit stewed, port-like in the mouth - not a good sign. Did not decant. 30 minutes later the port quality dissipated. Plum, baking spice, cedar on nose. Medium-full bodied. Integrated but discernable dusty, grainy tannins (love it). Still has acid, so it is balanced. Fruit of sour cherries, plum, currant, and spice on mouth. Long finish with sour cherry at the end. Lots of good things going on. This bottle is one of my oldest and was purchased from the winery. It survived very indifferent, if not abusive (unavoidable due to circumstances) cellaring at times including the '89 earthquake. Really pleased with its showing but like saying goodbye to an old friend. Definitely should be drunk sooner than later. Opened to celebrate the occasion of today's results.

November 7, 2020 - beautiful complex wine. Starts with a nose of soft plum and hints of spice and tobacco. Palate is complex with softness resembling a merlot and smoothness resmebling a vintage bordeaux.

July 18, 2020 - Still alive and kicking
    Good nose
    Carmel, toffee, hazelnuts.
Some baked current and baked black cherry pie.
Initial taste showed good acidity present and round tannins but flavors of black cherry were a bit sour and restrained — after 90 minutes fruit fully evolved. Wine was eventually a real crowd-pleaser.
    Drink now.
Not likely to improve further with additional aging.
