Community Tasting Notes 3

November 16, 2022 - Subtle and balanced with an inner depth. Certainly on the restrained side of Condrieu, and takes quite a bit of coaxing. What it lacks in fireworks it goes some way to compensating for with a delicacy and layers. Gently tropical, a nutty note on the palate.

Nice enough but really nothing special for my taste

    June 3, 2022 - Pale-to-medium lemon color in glass.
Closed nose on first night and poor pairing so put in the fridge over night. Second night tropical notes including banana and lychee.
Palate was dry, limited acidity, hints of almonds and mineral. Lighter body than expected, and also missing the oiliness that is traditional with viognier.
Long finish with rather bitter aftertaste.
Food pairings were difficult. Tried a grilled salmon marinated in soy / ginger / sesame and it didn’t work at all. Neither did a simple salad. Second night worked better with salty tortilla chips.
Hope to continue learning about this varietal but this first bottle was not for me.

January 15, 2022 - Nose of peach and apricot with some honey, typical Viognier. In the mouth a very smooth acidity and nice minerality. Normally I expect a more 'fatty' taste in a Condrieu but this one has real freshness, so white burgundy lovers will like the first mouth impression. The wine is 14% alcohol but doesn't feel like it. The finish is long and with lots of finesse. I have an ambiguous feel about the score I should give: I expected a creamy Condrieu (which I did not get = score 90) but got a fine mineral white with molten acidity (score 94), hence the 92. But after 1 hour it revealed more its true Northern Rhone origins, so perhaps it deserves a higher score. In any case a fantastic effort from Chapoutier!
