Community Tasting Notes 2

September 12, 2017 - Drank alongside the '90 and a '85 LMHB and Lynch Bages. It was a lovely wine and in fine shape. Classic Sociando with tobacco and pepper. Not as much density as the other theee wines but resolved and quite pleasant.

September 21, 2014 - I had this lovely Haut-Medoc from a very well kept bottle. In a blind tasting I would have guessed it to be a fifteen, maybe twenty year old wine - certainly not closing in on forty. The colour is still a surprisingly youthful deep purple with barely any amber to the rims. The exuberant aromatics are an equally pleasant surprise with pronounced notes of black currant, burnt tar and cigar humidor. The wine has retained an impressive balance and concentration along with a soft texture and tannins still holding firm. On the palate it does reveal some secondary flavours in the form of orange mocha, damp earth and cedar wood, but along with a very decent amount of black fruit remaining. The long and silky finish keeps going for forty seconds. This is at its peak now but everything suggests it will stay there for at least another five years.
Kudos to Jean Gautreau who has built the Sociando-Mallet brand up from scratch and has been crafting remarkable wines for nearly fifty years now. It seems somewhat of an aberration that this superb producer has not yet been rewarded with "Grand Cru" status - remaining often underrated and thus a great value wine.
