Community Tasting Notes 1

August 12, 2022 - Glossy, sour and short. Acidity sits outside the wine, feels overcorrected. This was $6 Australian, about how much a barista coffee costs here for context. It's got a pretty floral perfumed nose once the reductive funk blows off. But it's a bit downhill from there so far with this pop and pour. I'm struggling with this. Will give it an hour to improve before it's ditched. Sometimes the bargain bin gives a nice surprise. Not this time. Poor to acceptable. I'm not sure who would enjoy this, I've had much better made wine from a cask.

    An hour on...
Some tannin and savoury pepper grip is reigning in the jarring acidity as it opens some more. Some darker spice on the nose emerging too. Is that a touch of anise? It's improved with air, now firmly acceptable but I'm not yet enjoying it. Drink after a decant, and eat with some food to distract. This pizza is helping. Acceptable, but less still than average. Far from good. I wonder how Dans can sell this for $6 (inc Australias high imported wine taxes) and the maker cover costs of making and bottling and shipping. I just found it for $4.80 on Dan's online. Now I feel even more duped, but price now more reflects the quality I see.

Day 2, before I throw it out.
It's pulled some of its bits together overnight, now quite chewy and savoury. The alcohol is now showing a little too much, a slight burn through the finish, but it's also taken on a sappy and autumn leaves character too. I've been able to write a lot about this wine, it's really changed with air. I still don't like it, but it's interesting to watch evolve. I'm not well, so won't put a score. Fourth COVID shot and a severe allergic reaction.

Day three, I saved a touch in a glass from the sink to see how it might look day 3...

It's really thinned out, is quite dilute, on day three. A quick sniff and spit. It looks a lot like dilute raspberry cordial today.

There's some vinegar lift coming off the glass, and that metallic finish is still there.

The fruit today has dried fruit noted, prune and dried apricot, and orange.

There's some sweet spice, almost cinnamon like, through the still short finish.

It's not improved much over my time with it, but it's definitely shown more of its detail and has evolved.

I've not been able to drink more than 100mls of this at any sitting, but it keeps pulling me back in with something interesting. But I keep on coming back to it's short palate, metallic finish, and wishing I could find more in this simple but charming wine.

Drink this with friends, and music, and food, and you'll have a good time. You might also notice a little detail that was not there before to keep you more interested in quiet moments in conversation.

For $6 AUD (now $4.8 I see) this is a great party wine option where people are interested more in the party than the palate and is (perhaps too) easy on the pocket.

I'd love to know what Dan's paid for this one at a wholesale level.

    Cheers!
