Community Tasting Notes 6

    January 18, 2023 - A third bottle.
Still reticent nose, palate ok but also reticent and almost flat. Can taste the terroir but it just lacks pizzaz. Interesting to compare the winery website’s tasting notes.

  • Michael Mackenzie Does not like this wine:

January 10, 2023 - Opened a second bottle of six.

Shockingly bad, just lousy! Not sure whether this is the provenance but it is immensely disappointing.
What to do with the remaining bottles?!

  • Michael Mackenzie Does not like this wine:

January 8, 2023 - Off the old city wall of Dürnstein like a veranda glancing at the river Danube the unique position of this site, together with the soil contenting weathered sediments of primary rock, generates a singular expression of Grüner Veltliner: never fruity but always spicy and salty, equipped with matchless acidity. This wine stays in big oak casks on the yeast and lees till shortly before bottling. Patience and experience are appropriate with this wine and will be amply rewarded after some years of maturating – one of our signature wines!

    Grape variety: 100% Grüner Veltliner
    Age of vines: ∼40-80 years
Harvest: by hand beginning of October
Fermentation and maturation: 8-10 months in big oak casks (9-15 hl)
    Bottling: late summer (August)
    Alcohol: 13-13,5% Vol
    Source: winery website.

Revisited yesterday’s vacuvined bottle. Some improvement.
    Colour: light gold, bright, clear.
Nose: still reticent, soft, white fruits, rounded.
Taste: med body, rounded, silky, white fruits , ripe and quite rich, q powerful, med finish, rounded, white fruit, dry.
Overall, this is not obviously a GV but improves with time. Will open another bottle. Also unfamiliar with this producer but now the vineyard well.

  • Michael Mackenzie Does not like this wine:

January 7, 2023 - Tasted straight a day after delivery. Surprisingly dumb, a bad bottle or poor provenance?
Just plain dull which is not what it should be!

December 26, 2022 - A quite powerful but nicely balanced Veltliner.

Bouquet of apricot’s some Pfefferl and cream. The palate is rich but with a refreshing acidic vein.

Should age gracefully for another decade.
