Community Tasting Notes 20

April 28, 2024 - I can't remember if I bought this from B-21 or Costco but I do remember paying some ridiculous price (under $40 USD). Regardless, terrific entry-level St. Estèphe, the 2nd wine of Ch. Montrose and to be frank a much better deal than the grand vin considering the outstanding quality and drinking experience vs the enormous price delta between the two. I opened this on Saturday night and found it was wound pretty tight, closed off nose, palate everything so I pulled out the vacu-vin it and put into the fridge. On Sunday all that shifted and what presented itself was a rich, captivating wine that's dark & brooding in the glass with a pronounced bouquet and velvety mouthfeel. Loads of red/dark red/purple fruit mixed with herbs and notes of earth & tobacco. Tannins already nicely integrated; Finish lingers for 30-40 seconds. This is still young and can easily age another 3-5 years if properly stored. I know this is a 2nd wine but with a few more years of age I'd wager in a blind test it wouldn't drink like it.

92 points - very good wine with potential to add another 1-2 points

would I buy again - yes, excellent value at its price point ($40-$50 USD); outperforms much of its competition

February 27, 2024 - Chateau Montrose Tasting (Bentley Bar & Restaurant, Sydney): Plums, sweet spice, polished oak, a little red berry and blackcurrant underpin, touch of tomato leaf, cream, blackcurrant gains ascendancy on the nose with time. Juicy, fleshy, slightly jubey plum fruits, integrated woody tannin offer a textured burr. Simple(ish) but nice.

February 11, 2024 - All toasty oak on night one and not much else, reminding me why I don't often drink young Bordeaux. Replaced the cork in the nearly full bottle and checked in on a small glass the following afternoon. Now this is cooking. Lush, forward fruit has come to the fore, pushing the oak into the background. Age will be the best thing for this, but a long decant should make it approachable enough now. While second wines from Bordeaux can sometimes disappoint, Dame de Montrose does not.

January 14, 2024 - Great wine where the red fruit take the lead. Lovely balance with a appealing sweet note in the finish. Too young but already lovely.

January 1, 2024 - Drank from 0,375l. Had better bottles of this one. I think it's a little bit closed, because there are bitter notes at the end and the palate does not deliver very much fruit. Will wait at least 2-3 years before popping the next cork...89-90
