March 22, 2024 - Luckily this turned out to be a good bottle. It was surprisingly fresh for its 31 years with a linear shape, a bit shy in aromas but well focussed with still some primary griotte cherry fruit, fine minerals, some underlying roundness and complexity, bright acidity and and decent firmness on the finish. I can see what the late Hubert de Montille's admirers mean by diamond like focus but I prefer more sensuality and graciousness in Burgundy. But this bottle, but not its predecessor, was very good though.

March 26, 2023 - This is another disappointment from my small stash of Volnay from Hubert de Montille which I constituted in the 90s on the basis of the enthusiasm of a well qualified writer on Burgundy and others. It was conceded by them that Montille's wines needed a lot of time but most of mine were still unyielding between the 10 and 20 year marks and beyond, another was decayed like this one and only two after 20+ years were singing as Volnay should. This one could perhaps be classed as flawed because, in spite of a good level and colour, it was undrinkable due to strong "off" aromas of cabbage and bad drains. I will soon find out if it was a rogue bottle as I have two others left!?

March 21, 2021 - Just an amazing wine. Bright ruby red in color. Crystalline cherry with a bit of earthiness in the middle, but a long clean finish with great acidic balance. Perfectly integrated and clean. I don't get the rustic at all off these, just really pretty and delicate wines with just enough back-bone to stand up to meats like a pork tenderloin.

April 30, 2020 - Gonna revise what I said - this has aged very beautifully. Austere and feminine with dirty earth and dried violets. Not shy on the acidic spine. Solidly Volnay and very precise. Held really nicely for several hours (took about 30 min to bloom.) Long finish with moss and earth. Light tones of dried old perfume. Great balance and harmony. A real treat.

February 23, 2020 - another beautiful wine from the master - the essence of pure Volnay. It has high acidity, excellent structure and is very traditional. Excellent with duck. You could keep this for many more decades
