Community Tasting Notes 3

January 5, 2024 - Dull and slightly hazy garnet in appearance. On first pour, there was a strong rich plummy aroma with hints of mint and mushroom. It tasted of mature dark fruits and leather on initial sip, but you quickly sense deeper notes of cacao, tobacco and black peppers; accompanied by medium and polished tannin.

The aroma and taste of mushroom intensified visibly 20 minutes after decanting and it produced lingering aftertastes of leather, spices (especially black pepper) and liquorice. I read that this is a feature of Monastrell from Spanish terroir, as compared to varieties elsewhere.

I was expecting a bolder, full-bodied drink with a reasonably long finish but the bottle I had was subtle and delicately flavoured. I could taste the alcohol (14%) but in a nice way as it enhanced the finishing sensation.

We often think of the Monastrell (Mourvèdre - as it is know in France) variety in the context of blends, especially in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But I agree that stand alone Monastrell wines are under-valued. Great QPR!

This bottle grew on me as it opened up! It is a relatively easy drink — an enjoyable red that would go well with smoked, cured and gamey meat dishes. Decant and enjoy!

April 14, 2022 - Fun, little, easy drinking Monastrello I am being told. Clean easy, what happened to the world of RS in these wines. Without it I am at a touch of a loss.
