  February 13, 2021 - I heard of Zweigelt through The Great Courses lecture series: The Everyday Guide to Wine. Master of Wine Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan recommended this varietal if one wants to try a red from Austria, so I thought I'd take her advice and give it a whack.
  
  The grape itself is a cross between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch that was invented in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt (who, unfortunately, later became a Nazi during WWII). The wines have a reputation as being comparable to pinot noir in that they are bright, tart, and fruity.
  
  Light ruby in color, this is very aromatic with notes of red fruit along with a certain earthy mushroom tone that is quite prominent. Upon sipping one is met with a rather acidic wine that is low in tannins and light in body. It is quite fruity with prominent cherry and tart red raspberry. Definitely getting a smidge of red plum in there as well and a light touch of black pepper that emerges as the fruit starts to die down. The finish is dry with some lingering cherry, but it is a little flat and doesn't stand out in any way.
  
  Overall not a bad bottle: tasty, but nothing to write home about. I can see this making a decent easy-sipping wine, though it does whet my appetite to try more Zweigelt from other producers. Wine Folly recommends pairing this with BBQ chicken and I am inclined to agree, as I can see its fruitiness going well with hickory BBQ sauce.
