April 20, 2024 - Left to air 30 minutes in the bottle. It is starting to show its age so we’ll drink our last bottle quickly.

April 9, 2024 - On opening I found this rather pinched and austere, with a bitter note on the finish, and suspected it could be a faulty bottle, but as it opened up gradually it blossomed from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. There were black fruits and liquorice, underpinned with pleasing mature tannins which melted away to leave a lingering and satisfying finish. This was linear and perfectly proportioned, with nothing unnecessarily overdone. Great winemaking. CHP 94 pts

March 24, 2024 - I think this was an imperfect bottle that may have seen some heat damage at some point. That said, it was super pleasant mature claret that got better as it was open over the course of a couple hours.

March 17, 2024 - No detailed notes. Decanted about 1 hour and consumed over another 2 or 3. Very deep, almost opaque color with aromas of crushed leaves, cassis, tobacco, plums, and graphite. Mature and nicely integrated on the palate but seemed a bit angular, without the balance I expect from this estate. Perhaps it was an off bottle, though still delicious and classic in so many ways. Purchased with five others as futures and stored in my cellar since. The was the poorest of the 5 I've drunk to date.

March 9, 2024 - A classy fully mature St. Julien from a regular bottle in a tasting with the 1994 and 1995, side-by-side. Very enticing nose of gravel, graphite, cherries and just a bit of flowers and italian leather. With that I mean very elegant leather, restrained not tending to horse or manure. Elegance is the trademark of this wine. It has very balanced acidity on the palate supporting its structure. Smooth tannins I think reveal that this wine is ready to go. I think it is at its peak. Both the 1994 and 1995 showed considerably younger. Both of them appeared not to be as elegant as the 89. The 1994 had more forward fruit, a nose of more intense leather and gravel, less cedar elegance. A very drinkable wine that can nonetheless be in the bottle for a bit longer. the 1995 appeared the less compelling of the 3, with some imbalance between its somewhat alcoholic fruit and its acidity living on two separate layers and not enough body to support either. It is a pleasant wine but somewhat (at this point) inferior to the other two. I look forward to compare again some of this wines.

(Leoville Barton) Had this wine the other night. Nothing wrong with it. Good chunky Cabernet fruit, some earthy minerality, slightly soupy and stewed as it warmed up. Pretty balanced. Just an ok wine. Boring. The C-Span of wine. Could be the lameness of 1995 Bordeaux as I have never had one that has done anything for me at all.
