Community Tasting Notes 3

September 11, 2011 - Drunk at Chez Bruce in London, sourced straight from the winery's cellar. Mature, harmonious, and complex, rich in earth tones and cherries with a bit of funk--this actually tasted more Tuscan to me than Piedmontese. But it lacked concentration and power for me--none of the elements were strong enough to really announce themselves. Good food wine.

May 6, 2011 - Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): The 1969 Vallana Spanna would be nearly impossible to guess as a wine with 40+ years on it. The nose was dark with moist earth and herbs, yet there was a vibrancy to the plumy fruit and spice that followed. On the palate, it was remarkably fresh as it caressed the senses with strawberry, mulling spice and herbs. The finish carried this wine home as red berries and earth lingered on the palate.

May 6, 2011 - Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): One of my WOTN. Deep ruby/garnet color. Opened very funky, earthy, musty, almost seeming corked; damp turned earth with tobacco notes. But then changed over to more lively aromas of flowers and green leaves like mint. Long and silky on the palate with nice acidity. It's not what I'd call racy, but instead harmonious.
