Community Tasting Notes 5

January 30, 2011 - Beautiful full-bodied wine. What's really interesting about Gruner is that the $10 ones are lean and mean, only hinting at the big flowery notes in a $30 wine like this one.

I like those cheaper ones, but this is a whole different sort of flavor profile. Big and fragrant with lime, perfume, honey and peaches just spilling out of the glass. You can smell this one halfway across the room. It's plush and rich without being overbearing, with complex intermingling of honey, lemon, flowers and a hint of nuttiness.

This is great now, but could easily hang around in your cellar for 5+ more years.

August 5, 2009 - One of the best Gruner's I've experienced. Jamie Futscher's recc @Sunset Corners. Excellent balance of fruit and acidity. Drank perfectly with both butternut suash soup with yogurt, and cave aged gruyere.

July 25, 2009 - This is has been my favorite Federspiel over several vintages. I have not had the 2006 for some time and was very interested in checking-in on this wine. It is a completely different wine than the 2007. Upon opening I could immediately smell familiar Austrian Grüner aromatics leaping from the bottle. In the glass I initially smelled honey, wet stone and greens. Clearly ripe but not over-the-top. Over the course of an hour or so the honey and wet stone remained but more greens, herbs and floral aromatics emerged. As the wine cooled down a fresh hay smell emerged as well as some spice. Very open and expressive and by no means shut down. Lots of depth to the flavor and a very long contemplative finish. With just a bit more acidity and energy this would be an outstanding wine but I guess that is the tradeoff of a ripe vintage such as 2006. I think this will hope for a few more years.

January 2, 2009 - Quite nice. Bit of a sharp minerally note, and a fair amount of acidity, but balanced by nice fruit. A very enjoyable little wine.

July 19, 2008 - Regular dinner group (@ PZ): Apples and minerals in the bouquet. Pleasant citrus. Fresh acidity. Quite full bodied and a long finish. Very good wine.
