May 18, 2023 - Strawberries with wet stones on the nose with a hint of sulfur. Stewed strawberries and herbs on the palate. Mouthfeel is medium/medium-plus. Acidity is medium. Tannins are medium-plus/high with a medium-fine grit and drying character that builds. Overall, besides the slight sulfur note, I’m enjoying this wine. I really like the tannin character.

December 25, 2022 - Alcohol. Leather. Flat and big. Not so great

November 11, 2022 - 11eleven tasting: Simply one of the great wines that always punches above its weight, lots of rustic character, strikingly complex especially when paired against the Tensley All Blocks.

November 6, 2022 - Coming back to this wine after an 18 vintage break. My last purchase was the wild, and wildly variable 2000, which caused me to walk away. Hearing good things, and missing the Southern Rhône, I grabbed several bottles of the 2019. Tasted over 24 hours this was sleeker and more polished than the 1996-2000 wines that I was used to, but also still clearly typical of the appellation. Cherries, herbs, leather and dusty earth felt familiar. There wasn’t much brett/funk, but that probably was a good thing. Just a touch hot on the finish at first (thank you climate change), but that disappeared with air. Still a solid value for under $30, and I am more than tempted to try a few more vintages.

April 26, 2022 - Deep ruby to deep purple, high-toned nose of red berry, cherry, violet, blueberry, garrigue, loam, and subtle spice, rich mouth feel with layered dark, spicy berry fruit, and plump acidity, finishes with dark berry fruit folding into juicy acidity, touches of orange, grilled meats, alcohol, touches of earth and teeth coating tannins

Note: I discovered Domaine du Cayron in 2007 at the oh so charming Caveau du Gigondas and have been a fan ever since. But, I'm sad to report, each year it seems to get less and less appealing, it's bigger, with higher alcohol levels, and more rustic. In 2007, Domaine du Cayron stood out as a more restraint and elegant Gigondas, but the last few vintages have gone in a different direction, mournfully, one that is less to my liking.
