January 6, 2022 - This is quite involved! almost reminiscent of a quality French sweet vermouth with its minty spice character that is only accented further by celery salt, root vegetable savour and lifted by white peppery notes. The higher-pitched fruit works well in counterpoint to the cured meat character. There is an almost “chewy” texture to the midpalate, highlighting the typical Cote de Beaune styled earth/manure rusticity. This is begging for meat juices…beef or lamb, anyone? 93+

May 16, 2021 - A piquant nose of celery salt, Worcestershire sauce with an orange zest top note, incense, juicy acidity. No obvious tannin with a certain tomato, green vegetable note and iron/rusty minerality. I would like to revisit. Very charming and while drying, not at all as austere as many. Santanay rouge.

February 19, 2021 - This is another of those wines that is difficult to locate/specify within the CellarTracker program. It is more prominently labeled Chateau de la Charriere (see label photo) than it is “Domaine Girardin”. Both historically grew and bottled Santenay. I’m guessing it was bottled by the Girardins with grapes or wine from Charriere(?). Anyway, it was a lovely bottle of supple mature fruit, soil inflection, sweet vs savory character and impeccable balance. Still plenty of life left in it.
Note: Having discovered a wine shop (not far from where I overwinter) with a surprising stock of older burgundy, I have been tasting my way through their very fairly priced stock. Finding a few real gems, I go back to purchase more of those that truly impress. This is surely one!
NB: no longer need to wonder. A little research shows that back in the 60s, Jean Girardin purchased vineyards that included the Chateau de la Charriere which became the family home. The Santenay vineyards were subsequently divided in accordance with French inheritance laws with at least 2 heirs making wines from their share of the Chateau plots as well as from other sites in burgundy that were purchased. Not at all clear how Vincent fits in but the “newer generation” includes Yves, Benoit, Justin and undoubtedly others,…, A family tree would explain things much better!
