August 1, 2007 - Roger Belland is a top Santenay producer and the story behind this wine as the retailer told it to me -- I have no idea how much of this is true -- is that the importer was enamored of a particular row of vines and wanted it bottled separately. Belland doesn't do luxury cuvees and told him he could have the wine but not a special label, so it's just Bourgogne Rouge. Indeed this wine is about as classy as generic Bourgogne gets -- I don't think I've ever experienced tannin so lacy this far down the hierarchy. And it's classy not just in its refinement but in its breadth. The fruit is pure and round, fragrant with violets and roses with a touch of subtle, well-integrated barrel spice on the finish. Even at $25, impressive Burgundy for the money and a persuasive argument that "vintage" looms pretty large in the old "producer-vineyard-vintage" trinity.
