December 17, 2023 - Comprehensive Tenuta delle Terre Nere (Chicago, IL): Bigger tannins, and darker, especially in the context of 2017s. Intense, heavyset, and leathery. A bit of a divergence from the other 2019s today, but still very much a convincing wine.

September 18, 2023 - Decanted 4hrs. I have always enjoyed the Terre Etna Single vineyard designates, but this 19 Santo Spirito really had another gear on display last night. At once both dense and full of structure, at times coming across like a young Aglianco based red - even some volcanic material was present such as pumice and whatnot. But this also carried a wonderful elegance too, very tactile, precise, and just a pleasure to let this play around in your mouth before swallowing. The only knock would be the nose, which seems to be in a youthfully stubborn state, but I have full confidence this just needs time. One to cellar.

March 13, 2023 - 14.5% ABV. Medium ruby appearance. Fresh black cherry, red plum, sage, smoke, and minerality on the nose. Same notes on the palate. Medium body, medium+ acidity, medium tannin, medium+ length.

This is a joy and very refreshing to drink now, but it will probably show more complexity with age and will see how it involves in a couple more years. I agree with others that this wine is Burgundy-esque.

March 25, 2022 - If I tasted this blind I probably would have guessed nice southern Burgundy, albeit with a fuller body and more tannins.

Very nice Etna Rosso from the Santo Spirito contrada. Medium bodied, with medium+, still young tannin structure and high acidity, this wine is right up my alley. It is like a fusion between PN and Nebbiolo. Nose of licorice root, pepper and toasted spices. The palate is characterised by dusty, drying tannins with ripe cherry and blueberry notes, clove and interesting minerality (although I don’t really like this term). Relatively high in alcohol (14.5%) but hides it very well. Give it a couple years and it will problably be more integrated, making for an exciting glass.

Wines like this make Etna a very special region for the wine geek, combining a cru-like singe vineyard classification with high altitude but southern conditions, very old vines (with this specific vineyard ranging from 60 to 100 years, and even some prephylloxera vines of over 140 years old). Loved this and can’t wait to visit the vineyards this May.

February 22, 2022 - Fine crisp, fresh, minerally and saline. It’s so expressive as it opens up to rich cream on the mid-palate. There are perhaps flavours of tomatoes, but overall it is just so complex and beautifully poised with a fabulous finish. Very complex and classy. CHP 93pts
