July 1, 2023 - Nice, easy to drink.

January 27, 2023 - Bright, tangy fruit up front with some briary blackberry, orange rind, mineral, spicy oak notes
Within a medium bodied frame. Finishes well with a sense of balance and body. Well made wine from a consistently reliable producer

October 7, 2022 - One off ($20 with a generous coupon) from wine.com (spend $300, get $100 off, most of which went to buying a Sass as a birthday present to myself) about a year ago. On the nose and palate, vibrant notes of black cherries, blackberries, ripe strawberries, forest floor, red licorice, green pepper, black pepper, mixed spice and a bit of dark florals. Dark purple-brown, medium-full bodied, thick legs. Racy acidity, medium+ tannins, no heat (15.1% abv). Good++c omplexity and persistence, VG intensity. I’m a fairly rare drinker of Zins—I can enjoy them, and have been a 15 year volunteer at ZAP—but often find all but the best (which is to say, IMO, Chase, Turley and sometimes Ridge) to be a bit monolithic. That said, I’ve been an intermittent drinker of this and its sibling cuvée, Tip Top, for about 20 years. Can a $20ish Zin be balanced and even a bit elegant? Yeah, kinda, sorta. This came out of the bottle pretty ready to go, but did integrate more with 30 minutes-hour of air, then has held well over 2 nights. With not much sweetness and what’s there balanced by savoriness and surprisingly good structure, this wine is highly enjoyable on its own but worked equally well with burritos. While not something to put away with your Haut Brions, this could have a little upside in the next few years, and certainly has the structure to hold well during that time regardless. Would I drink this if I could afford said HBs, Latours and Proms on a nightly basis? Well, I have better things to do that live my life worrying about counterfactuals, but when I get to the point I can’t appreciate a well-made, well-priced satisfying quaff from time to time and my ceiling is also my floor, well, at a minimum, it will probably be time to hire a real CPA and stop using TurboTax. But more seriously, some appreciation for the low, at least when done right, certainly makes me all the more fond of the high (even if the high is more like Abreu than Screagle, at least when I’m footing the tab). Solid competition for the Turley Juvenile in this category. Not life changing, but I’m pretty happy with my life anyway. 91-92, and definitely Cheapo HoF material.

July 9, 2022 - Smooth, elegant Zin. Black cherry, blackberry, juicy, but not in that jammy style, which I also like. Bit of pepper and licorice. Needs a little air to bring out everything, but worth the wait.
