May 11, 2024 - Henri Giraud Champagne “MV16”. This was awesome. Huge sour apple, pinot cherry, sherry, tangerine oil and brioche notes on a long and smooth finish with a fine mousse. Not as oxidative as Selosse and reminds me of an even more concentrated Ulysse Colin. I have a bottle of the flagship Argonne in the cellar and can’t wait to try if the “second” wine is this good…nice way to celebrate the first day of our first date anniversay weekend ;) …easy 95/100.

April 10, 2024 - Even more ripe and Martinelli’s “apple cidery” than the previous bottle I had a little while back, this is a miss overall for me unfortunately. It’s in the good/not great category. As others have noted, precision and focused energy are lacking here. Too chewy for me at the end of the day. Not to be too critical, because this isn’t a bad swig necessarily if you’re not paying too much attention, but keep your wine geek hat off or you might be a tad disappointed. I really wanted to be captivated by this wine, but alas, it’s a triple “zzz” M. Night Shyamalan type of showing for me.

December 13, 2023 - Voluminous and vinous. It’s silky and almost ethereal with great concentration of nose and palate at the same time. Partly resembles unforgettable Argonne “3D” feeling, but far less precise than the latter.

December 6, 2023 - Welcome home dinner for Chien, my aperitif for the lads to kick-start our La Sense meal in Damansara Kim.

Robert Parker memorably described this as, "The greatest champagne you've never heard of".
Blend: 80% Pinot noir and 20% Chardonnay, all fermented in wood, 60% new. 9ha estate vineyards, with this wine coming exclusively from Aÿ, Vallée de la Marne.

    Appearance: Golden with shimmering hues.
Nose: Toast, yeasty with lots of brioche.
Complex with many layers, including red apple and minerality (chalk) too.

Bubbles: Froth and effervescence dissipates rather quickly, with a gentle and tingling tail.
    Style: Ripe and rich style.

Mouthfeel: Body medium-, dry on the palate. Oak and caramel start to develop as this warms up, and picks up more air too.
Acidity: Vibrant and high, very juicy.
Finish: More caramel with hints of strawberries too.

Henri Giraud produces champagne from ones such as the “natural” edginess of the Esprit Nature all the way to the luscious, oak-laden indulgence of the cuvée formerly labelled as this Fût de Chêne but now merely marked “MV.”

Fermentation and ageing take place in terracotta or sandstone eggs or else in small casks made from Argonne forest oak, grown in the vicinity of Aÿ, which Claude Giraud has been instrumental in revitalising.

Wine is vinified and matured in 50 per cent new oak casks, with 1/3 of the blend from a perpetual reserve dating to 1990.

December 5, 2023 - High acidity, but measured. Not too piercing. Nuanced and subtle with fresh fruit, pastries and some minerality. Still feels very young.

    Medium gold colour.

Pronounced aromas of lemon zest, fresh biscuits, yellow apple, apple pie, nutmeg, cinnamon, pear, lemon tart, wet slate, white blossoms.

    Pronounced palate.

Medium (-) body, high acidity, long finish.
