  August 17, 2007 - My first experience of Cretan wine and of these indigenous varietals (Kotsifali and Mantilaria). Cost $10. Tastfully, there is art from the Knossus site on the front label (one of the great early cities of Greek and Western civilization). Decanted but no time to breathe. The closure is cork but in good condition. The colour of this wine is light red and somewhat thin. The aroma is like Agiorgitiko (dry and bitingly spicy). But the flavour is, in some ways, better than an Agiorgitiko: slightly smoother, less harsh and pleasanter. The tannins are prominent but softened, at least at first. There is a slight complexity, but it isn't great, and the fruitiness is quite imperfect. Overall, good.

  Bottled by Boutari of Thessaloniki. Abv 12%. Inspired by the dominant colour of the pillars of the renowned archaeological site of Knossos. Grapes cultivated in the sunny vineyards of northern Crete, close to the Aegean. Drink at 57 to 61 degrees F.
