Community Tasting Notes 3

April 30, 2021 - 3 days in Napa: Arkenstone, Memento Mori, Maxem, The French Laundry, Christopher Tynan, Kinsman, Harlan, Vice Versa, Accendo, Fairchild, Macdonald, and a truckload of others (Napa): A barrel sample, carrying firm and fine tannins that showcase blackberry, black licorice, and violet notes with cleverness and class. The floral component becomes more intense with air, racing through the nose and the back of the mouth, finishing deeply pitched, but with a flowery smelling salt inhalant response that wakes up all the senses. A fascinating mix of verve and gravity.

Less overtly flamboyant than the Memento Mori wines, the 2019 Arkenstone Estate impresses for its keen sense of concentrated focus and swanky measured panache. It tastes expensive. For me, this is quintessential Sam Kaplan. Intense and concentrated while simultaneously holding an elegance and grade that demonstrates skillful winemaking and a specific attention to keen flavor detail. Well done! 96-97+ points.

April 22, 2021 - Barrel sample. I really think the Estate wine from Arkenstone is a sleeper in Napa. It used to be $175, and I never saw it sell out, despite the critical acclaim, wonderful vineyard source and fabulous winemaker. For some reason the word isn't out like on Memento Mori. Let me say that IMO, this is amazing wine, more age worthy than those on the valley floor and is likely to surpass many great cabs over time.

In comparison to the MM barrel samples, this clearly shows a firmer structure, stronger tannins and a bit higher level of acidity, which is what you'd expect from a wine with elevation. The energy is exceptional, with fabulous red and blue fruit concentration and a really significant mineral streak that brings a nice balance to the wine. This is likely to be a wine you need to wait on while devouring the MM's, but it'll payoff in spades. 96-98+

April 3, 2021 - Dream Trip - Napa On A Mission - All My favorites Plus A Few New Ones; 4/1/2021-4/4/2021 (Napa Valley): The second to last wine of the flight was a barrel sample of the 2019 Estate- WOW and now this fits exactly in my wheelhouse and can see why Arkenstone has such a following. I would have loved to taste the 2018 as based on a minor vintage adjustment that I have now logged away in my mind (2019 seems to be similar to 2015 combined with 2012/2014 (no clue which combo but its not exactly 2015) taking away a little lushness and adding a bit more lift/tannins the '18 must be a stellar wine.

This wine over delivered with lush dark fruits and minerals with just enough lift to keep things honest. This seems like it will be an earlier drinker than my estimation on the '18 based on vintage alone (caveat have not tasted simple assumption here), yet with full enjoyment from PnP though medium term cellaring. I will not rate this wine 'officially' as I am not familiar with the winery or this bottling to feel confident enough with my weather forecasting but if I did I would guess 95+ depending on final blend. I will be a buyer.
