May 24, 2020 - Golden in the glass. Sublime nose - a summers evening with honey suckle and an undertone of petrol. Luscious full body, beautiful delicate sweetness on the palate of caramelised pears, lemon curd and marmalade. Very long piquant orange peel finish. This was superb, and could go for years longer.

March 31, 2019 - Potent nose of honeyed, tropical fruit, hint of spice, plus a very soft silky palate. Taste of pear, grapefruit, honey, pineapple with a tangy long finish. Great balance. Very good.

December 24, 2017 - Naja... war sehr anständig. In Ordnung.

May 1, 2017 - J.J. Prüm Whelener Sonnenuhr (Mostly Auslese) Dinner (Rouge Tomate): With coaxing this nose gives up a complex bouquet of echinacea and honey with fresh herbal notes. Smoky honey as well. Gunpowder and spent 12 gauge shells. Ripe pineapple on the palate with big acid to balance out delicious sweetness. Both '95 and '96 are terrific.

March 20, 2016 - Short story is that this is still in the early adolescence with plenty of aged pine wood, complex citrus, and somewhat hidden lusciousness, also showing a lactic note (some malolactic?); edging into tangerine: all enveloped with the special botrytis note, mostly indescribable but showing fresh juicy apricot. Also shows a hint of brothiness, spearmint sprinkles and warm beeswax smoke.

This one is quite punchy, not yet showing too much finesse, but that may take a few more years. Drink 2019-2036.

    The longer note:

Barbara's birthday and the first day of spring. Trying it with Amish white popcorn sauteed in Ghee with fleur de sel.

AP 15 97, 10 a.m. Cork in relatively good shape at 19-20 years of age when pulled with the Durand tirer-bourchon. On opening: Copper gold with a hint of warmth in the color. Opens very green and 'aged pinewood' resinous, quite punchy; underneath a wonderful waft of specifically Prüm noble botrytis. Complex citrus and terpene hydrocarbon expressions ("diesel"), with the luscious sweetness just peeking out. The Impitoyable pulls out milky lactic notes, amd empyreumatic, with slight veal-both note. The finish shows plenty of skin notes and white tannins. On to the main show this evening.

At 3 p.m. (5 hours, corked in frige) it's got a beautiful gold/orange, moderately refracted appearance, no sheeting at all; searchling aroma of fresh tart apricots, peach, and pine resin. There is a bit of hot beeswax under there but not as much as I usually find in this estate's wines from this Einzellage. Nicely juicy. Plenty of development ahead on palate: grapefruit and cream at present. Now this wine is atypically much more about power than finesse, but class is there and the finesse might just need some time to show itself. Great length. Come back to it for several days if you don't drink it all up; this wine is actually on the young side for a twenty-ish Prüm Goldkap. Drink now or hold for another 3-4 years and on to 35 years, likely.

Popcorn is a delicate enhancement to these wines as usual; and the Ghee does quite well.

On Monday March 28, there're still a couple ounces left in the refrigerated bottle. There is a creamy diesel note, with a little pine needle underlay. Rich and full and pungent, with a nice skin texture and a powerful but integrated acidity. It may come up by a point if held another 5-10 years.
