Community Tasting Notes 7

January 28, 2024 - A good effort for what has been one of the hardest years for Barbaresco, right after the splendid 206 (and 2015).

Beautiful luminous ruby color, pale intensity.

The nose has medium intensity, with typical notes of rose and violet mixed with red cherry. The wine manages to keep the flavors on the cool side, in contrast with most 2017 barbarescos where the fruit tends toward cooked and jam varieties. Interesting secondary notes of leather, tobacco, and a hint of coffee complete the bouquet. Wood is used but not primary in the nose.

The entrance in the mouth is powerful and bold. In such a dry year, it is remarkable how produttori's rabaja manages to keep high acidity and matured, fine tannins through the midpalate as well. Unfortunately, the alcol level (marked 14.5%, probably higher) has a wide impact, making the wine losing its balance. In the aftertaste, some primary notes (cooked red cherry) and licorice.

All in all, this was a very good effort. 2017 was remarkably bad. Rabaja in particular, with its south-west exposure, is an MGA that suffered from drought. For this reason, the high quality of winemaking is remarkable in this product, managing to smooth a product that would have, otherwise, been characterized by spikes in its tasting components.

November 22, 2023 - Dried orange rind, cranberry, high acidity and high tannins dominate the long finish

July 17, 2023 - Wonderful subtle bouquet of cherry tart, mint, pipe tobacco, flowers. Lush, soft palate of ripe yet tart cherries, with some acidity and freshness, quite a tannic bite creeping up, leading to a long finish of crushed stones, spices, unresolved tannins. Great to drink young, although relatively tannic, especially on the second night.

June 12, 2023 - Ordered at a restaurant in Alba
    no technical notes

right out of the bottle, the nose was a bit muted and the palate was high toned. I chose to decant it and drink over dinner - good idea.
Once this began to open up, the nose was giving off notes of eucalyptus, mint along with mid range red fruit.
The palate was very smooth and quiet long but not overly complex. As the bottle came to a closing, the tannins on this wine became more and more pronounced.
If I had some bottles of this, I would keep it in the cellar for the next 4 or 5 years based solely on the tannin structure. Initially, I thought that this would be a wall of tannins, but I met me with a soft palate considering.
I think that this needs some time to come together
    hold
