May 4, 2021 - Less than one month after the same thing happened to Xavier Auerbach, I stumbled upon three presumingly missing bottles of Von der Fels 2006. I fully agree with Xavier's review below. Never meant to be kept so long, but what a treat! I am truely stunned by the delineation, precision and above all the perfect balance of this modest cuvée. It is also with his basic wines where the master stands out from the pack. Still fresh as a daisy. This sounds weird after 15 years, but if the other two bottles are in similar shape, they will last for at least 3-5 more years. If a 2006 from Rheinhessen perfoms like this, how would far better vintages like 2004 and 2005 Von der Fels taste now?

April 8, 2020 - Such a nice surprise - I was rummaging through my cellar looking for my last bottle of Von der Fels 2010, when I found this bottle of the 2006! I thought that my small stock had run out years ago. Last bottle from a half case purchased in 2008. Excellent level, but the cork disintegrated. I don't think that this wine was designed to last this long, especially from such a difficult vintage in Rheinhessen, but it has survived reasonably well. The full yellow colour indicates a good bit of evolution, and the warm nose and broad palate confirm this, with a delicately honeyed character, touches of tobacco and butter and softer textures. On the finish however, the chalky minerality shines through, there are herbal notes and firm phenolic grip, and notes of citrus and tropical fruits emerge. Objectively past its peak I would have thought, but still a lovely drink. Note: according to Mosel Fine Wines, the 2006 Von der Fels comes only from Grand Cru sites, essentially from the Dalsheimer Hubacker, the Abtserde part of the Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen, the Westhofener Kirchspiel and Westhofener Morstein.

May 8, 2018 - Splash double decanted back into the bottle and served over 2 evenings. Lovely balance but a little compact and simple on the first night. Broadened quite a bit on night 2 to reveal lots of tropical fruits on the nose but still a bit flat/pinched on the palate.

April 7, 2018 - No cork issues with this bottle. Pop and pour. Lovely nose, with slate, petrol, honeysuckle and lemon curd leaning into some mint. On the palate, good acidity and an effervescent prickle, leading into loads of stone and lemon. Much better than my previous bottle on the palate, but doesn't seem like it will improve much from here on out.

November 20, 2017 - Cork completely fell apart as I opened it, so I had to pour this through a sieve into a decanter. Deep gold in color; on the nose, beautiful, intense petrol note with lemon curd and honeysuckle, together with a touch of honey. On the palate, acid is still vibrant, and while there is good intensity at first with loads of slate and a touch of grapefruit pith, it falls off somewhat quickly to leave a slightly bitter grapefruit pith note. Nevertheless, still lively and beautiful aromatics.

Rockss and Fruit

(Keller Von der Fels Trocken) This is young vine fruit from Kirchspiel and Hubacker. This was lovely and a shockingly great value. Loads of peach, celeriac, crunchy minerals and a dazzlingly pure rain-water like presence on the palate. There is lovely concentration here and huge core of fruit, mineral and acid. What a wine. Perfect dry Riesling for drinking now.
