June 14, 2023 - high-toned and bright on the nose, aromas of citrus, apple, quince, ethereal flowers and honey, a little wet wool and petrichor too

viscous and sweet on the palate, buried acidity is strong enough to keep this fresh, and it actually has a lively character, but it is also soft and plush

finish has gorgeous earthy and stony character, this needs at least a few years to develop more honeyed and nutty tones, at which point it will be far more interesting

April 22, 2022 - Classic Loire chenin on the nose with wool/lanolin, minerality, apple, and honey.

Medium plus acid with perceivable sugar, roughly on par with a spatlese riesling.

We went through all sweetness levels from Le Mont 2020 and this was my favorite. I'd assume the Moelleux was picked last and the additional phenolic ripeness shined. An iconic wine that should continue developing for a decades to come.

August 18, 2021 - Le Mont is located above the tufa caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It is mentioned as early as the 15th century and has been highly appreciated since then. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet estate and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. It is characterized by the topsoil, several meters deep, of a pebbly flint, sometimes the size of a fist, called perron there, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone.

The harvest took place in 2020, between September 7 (the earliest date in the history of the winery) and September 25. As the vintage was strongly characterized by sun and warmth, mainly residually sweet wines were produced. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed and fermented spontaneously. Malolactic fermentation took place only in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Moelleux means at Huet: between 45 and 55 grams of residual sweetness. In this case it is 49 grams.

The 2020 Le Mont Moelleux is fresh and lively, fine, elegant and eternal. The complex bouquet opens with yellow and green apples, lemons, limequats and grapefruits including zests, as well as some slightly exotic notes of papaya and just-ripe pineapple. In addition, there are subtle notes of curry leaves and apple peel. On top of that is the scent of crushed quartz rock so typical of Le Mont.

On the palate, the 2020 Le Mont Moelleux appears concentrated and complex from the start. The 49 grams of sweetness are noticeable, but are integrated quite wonderfully into the lively acidity and dancing minerality. The Moelleux has an amazing amount of grip and clear phenolics, along with ripe fruit, some tart orange notes and an intriguing mix of flint and salt that remains present until the last corner of the long finish. The wine is, of course, only at the beginning of its evolution, which will easily last two decades. But in the balance that Chenin Blanc offers, it is already fantastic.
