February 11, 2024 - 5/9, good cork. Decanted and immediately served.
This has a medium/deep garnet core with a pale garnet rim. The nose is developed, meaty with bacon in particular, black olive, smoke, touch of soil. Quite complex. It’s medium bodied on the palate, black fruit, bacon, black olive, resolved tannins, middleweight, fresh acids, good length finish with more black olive just a sense it maybe starting to dry out a touch. Drink now and next 3-5 years.

September 26, 2021 - Sunday hangout (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly mature for a 2005; this shows a fair amount of secondary characteristics already. Quintessential northern Rhone syrah, this is a wine that is dominated by more meaty, brothy elements. There's clearly some of the syrah spice and some briny, olive notes as well. Quite tasty, but I can't help but shake the thought that this is maturing far faster than I would expect.

February 23, 2021 - 2005 Joel et Romain Champet Côte-Rôtie, La Viallière, Grand Vin, alc12.5%. Decanted 2 hrs. Some clearing of color at the edge and starting to show a hint of brown. Rustic meaty nose. Palate is similar with meat and leather and earthiness. Clearly Northern Rhône characters shine through Slightly sweet but the finish turns savory. Drinking well but close to ( or slightly past) maturity.

    September 13, 2020 - 4/9, good cork. Decanted 1/2 hr.
Deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is complex, developed, mainly red fruited, quite bacony with tapenade and spice notes. Medium bodied on the palate, this is soft, savoury and spicy with red fruit again to the fore but plenty of bacon and tapenade, soft tannins, fresh acidity and a touch of white pepper on the long, harmonious finish. This remains excellent is and is drinking well, though there is no need to hurry.

July 8, 2020 - Aerated in decanter 90 minutes. Crazy good, crazy powerful and complex aromas that just don't stop. The combination of freshly cut flowers, hard candies, olive, dried red fruits, soy, etc. were beautiful. The med+ bodied palate is more dialed back but that's not to say it's inferior, it's just different, think restrained elegance, if you will. Another bottle that seems to be at peak, so best to drink up sooner than later. Lots of fun, and a good partner to food. recommended
