Community Tasting Notes 4

September 11, 2008 - Nose: The nose reminds me just a bit of some Rhone wines I've had, but it's lacking the Garrigue and other aromas typical or those beauties. Instead, this has a more astringent spiciness -- perhaps it's new American oak? In any case, behind all of this there is a distinct smell, at least to me, of wet brown pinestraw and cinnamon Trident gum. Sounds crazy, but that's what I'm getting.

Palate: A bit heavy on the oak, again tastes like new American oak, but it's not so much that it masks the grape's flavors. This reminds me a bit of a Lagrein I had a few months ago; a medium-bodied easy drinker, this wine features fairly high acidity (a bit alkaline, even), flavors of bitter cranberries, some plum, and a tad of the brown pinestraw from the nose. Not great, but interesting.

Finish: The finish is short and not particularly memorable. That said, it's wouldn't turn me away from this wine.

I'm glad I had this, as it's one of the only Charbonos (called Bonarda in Argentina -- different from wines called Bonarda elsewhere) I've ever had, if not the only one.

July 1, 2008 - Nose: Bright spicy and slightly pickled peppers, with black fruits and a bit of dry earth.

Palate: Black fruit on a dry yet smooth backbone, with medium(-) body; the dryness fades on the tail end of the attack, however, revealing subtly spicy peppers that transfer nicely from the nose, with quiet leather and plum notes. Not incredibly complex, but then again more than a one-dimensional two buck chuck.

Finish: A tinge hot, but I like it. The finish is nice and smooth, with short-moderate length, much like that of a well-made Shiraz in that the spiciness fades and gives way to leaving a nice taste in your mouth.

This screams value. If you want a great price on a South American wine but your tastes are too new world for Chilean Carmenere or Argentenian Malbec (both of which my old world palate loves), this adds the hint of fruit you may have been looking for. Great QPR. 87

    From the Dallas Morning News:
"Bonarda, an Italian grape, is a major player in Argentina. Durigutti makes it big and lush with spicy, blueberry, blackberry aromas and flavors, bursting ripe and round in the mouth and finishing with smooth tannins. In a word, yummy. Try it with a juicy burger with all the trimmings."

March 4, 2008 - Great value--a wonderful every day wine. Wonderful fruit and finish. Hints of leather, plums, and a bit of green pepper.

October 7, 2007 - Great food wine at a terrific price. Deep eggplant in color, with aromas of blueberries, leather, and plums. Low-tannin mid-palate with lots of silky blueberry and plum flavors, mineral inflected finish. Had with early autumn minestrone, rosemary bread, and it was a fantastic pairing.
