April 15, 2023 - Still tracking nicely. I am struck by the way that this wine manages to walk the relatively narrow path for me where this variety is concerned. I enjoy some aspects of Grenache - the perfume of strawberry and raspberry and even a touch of confectionary - but I really do not like the intrusion of high alcohol, the overtly confectionary (when the maker has slightly misjudged things and picked a degree too ripe), or the nastiness in the tannins one can see when the maker has picked a touch under-ripe.

I am also aware that in some ways the Grenache I like best may often be more like Shiraz than Grenache - I am happy if there is some funk and meatiness in Grenache. Being rigidly doctrinaire I like varietal purity.

This wine ticks all the right boxes for me. I have kept the same score as my earlier reviews although perhaps I would have wound the score back to 91-92 if I had my time again - the wine deserves to be rated 'Excellent' but I don't think it is as close to 'Outstanding', as 93 does suggest.

I am quite excited about the imminent arrival at my doorstep of the 2022 vintage.

December 13, 2021 - I return to the scene of the crime, or is it more like a dog to its vomit? At any rate, I opened this to enjoy with a boutique hamburger and by Jove it was good! It is settling into its groove and like all good women, it is putting on some weight but carrying it with style. One does need something to hold onto. The perfume is also exotic and one must jump in! We live for the slam!

July 13, 2021 - I am a miserable bastard, unlike this wine, which has the joy, elegance and breeding that I so conspicuously lack.

This is from a screw cap, so no Russian roulette with TCA and all the other bugbears associated with the ridiculous cork. Note made about 5 hours after opening, no decant.

Colour is vibrant dark cherry and only a little fading towards rim as one tilts the glass.

Nose is of ripe raspberry fruit, a hint of wine gum and something a little spicy. Fear not - no lolly water elements here.

Palate is wonderfully alive, intense, long and potent. Flavours as per nose. There is something here that reminds me of the final scene in the movie 'Casablanca'. Perhaps this lacks the complexity of the 2019, although it is not a simple wine. By God it is gorgeous. If you don't respond to this you are probably dead, or may as well be.

This wine is perfect for hedonists everywhere.

Straight Grenache is not an easy thing - it has a tendency to go from nearly ripe to over-ripe and porty in a heartbeat and the tannins can be tricky. The tannins here are superbly handled.
