January 15, 2022 - From half bottle. Saturated cork. Great color - would guess late '80s from the meniscus. Unfortunately, there's a prominent Elmers Glue component that detracts, but the wine stands up to it to a degree. Underneath there's good density and intensity to the fruit and nice tertiary development.

September 26, 2020 - These Forman-era Sterlings never disappoint. Gorgeous, ethereal nose of rich plum fruit with tar, tobacco and ash. Palate is rich, dense and still amazingly fresh. So complex and long. Bravo.

April 22, 2017 - From magnum. Nose of red currants, bright cherry, menthol, hints of plum. On the palate great flavors of cherry, mint, plum, currants, with a hint of spice. Great balanced finish with plenty of grip. Unbelievably good bottle. Great experience.

July 17, 2015 - I had very little hope that this bottle would have still been good, and I was quite surprised. There is definitely a strong oaky character here, but there was still fruit, and the wine has held up remarkably well.

March 11, 2015 - Old Sterling Reserve Vertical (Hill Country): Sort of in between the 1977 and 1974 -- it's riper than the 1974 but not quite as pure or complex, but without the richness and concentration of the 1977. But as the wines breathes up it picks up all sorts of interesting truffle and gravelly graphite nuances, and it's probably the most mineral wine in the bunch. Wonderful.

(Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve) Group's #4 (my #4) – 35 pts.; 0, 4, 1, 1 - medium rust/red violet color with pale meniscus; mature, lamb jus, wet mahogany bark and charcoal nose; tangy, tart, mature palate, like an old Barolo--sweet tannins are all that's left; medium finish
